Read about Ch Duncan's Birthday adventures...
Oh yeah…a little birthday update for Nana....
I got home yesterday evening about 5:30 pm, looked out in the back yard and only saw Trey. Went all through the house, peering out multiple windows and doors, still saw no other dogs. I then walked out back, whistled and called their names. Here comes Trey, alone, whining and crying. So I start checking the fence line. Sure enough, in one spot the wire bull fencing had been pulled down and three boards have been knocked loose in the privacy fence. Pretty strong evidence that an escape had been made.
By this time Cliff has arrived home, and we locate keys and leads and head out into the driveway to get into the van and start combing the neighborhood. At this point, a suburban drives up, rolls down the window and says, “Aren’t you the folks who have the Danes?” I reply, “well, yes, we do, but right now we’re missing two” to which he responded, “they’re not missing…they’re at my house!”
He is a neighbor (about 5 blocks away) who lives near the entry to the subdivision. He saw Duncan and Trooper, was greatly concerned that they might make their way to the highway, so he captured them in his fenced yard. (Seems his family had had a Dane when he was a boy). He tried to get them into his Suburban to bring them home, but they wouldn’t cooperate. (They’ve been “trained” not to accept rides from strangers) So instead, he let them into his house!
Both he and his wife were home, along with two small (age 5-7) children. When Cliff arrived, the wife let the boys out into the yard, and after one lap around the outside of the house (chasing their cats!) they happily greeted Cliff!!
It seems Duncan thought his birthday should include some excitement!! Fortunately, both were unharmed in any way & the neighbor’s house, children and cats were all okay too.
My guess is they were headed to Baskin Robbins..after all, who doesn’t like ice cream for their birthday?? I think it’s surprising that Trey didn’t go with the others on the adventure, but my guess is he didn’t have a wubbie for support (Trey & his brother Ch Titan are wubbie lovers)!
Trooper apparently had a grand time (his first, and I hope, last free run). Once home, after a very long drink of water, he was zonked out. Running with a champion is hard work!!
We’re going to bake some chocolate chip cookies this evening & take over to our neighbors for their concern & kindness. And yes, Duncan did indeed get his ice cream, at home, after supper.
Funny note about Duncan's sire, Magnum from Duncan's breeders Don & Penny Mikeman: . On Magnum's 6th b-day he was up at Kathy's house where there were no girls in season and he could be stress free for the week. It was a beautiful day much like today and Magnum escaped her house through a window that was only raised 3". Well he was headed home to momma who was missing my big bub. Someone from Kathy's work spotted him and tried to get him in the truck. Magnum was OK with the new friend but he WAS NOT ABOUT to get into a truck with a stranger. So they waited on Kathy who raced home at 80MPH to get her friends missing dog and he gladly got in the van with Aunt Kathy. This was so Deja-Vu. Too cute. Well, Penny was missing my Magnum and Magnum was missing his momma, so I jetted up there mid-week to pick up my boy. He was a great dog and we miss him greatly too.
